Do I have a right to register with an NHS dentist?

People lost their right to register with an NHS dentist in 2006 when the NHS introduced a new contract with dentists.

In England, you do not formally register with a dentist as you would with a GP.

You can attend any dentist - even if the practice is based in a different area from where you live - as long as they can see you and are taking on NHS patients. This is because technically, the arrangement between a dentist and patient only lasts as long as your course of treatment. It doesn’t give you the right to stay permanently registered with the same dental practice. But your dentist may choose to keep you on an informal list of regular patients and invite you back for regular check-ups.

You don't necessarily have to pay for your appointments and treatment if the dentist does accept NHS patients.

How can I find an NHS dentist?

Use the NHS website to search for a dentist near you - just enter your postcode. The site also provides information on which dental practices currently accept new patients, whether they offer urgent appointments, and how others have rated the service.

How do I apply as an NHS patient?

You can apply as an NHS patient if you are...

  • you're aged under 18, or under 19 and in full-time education
  • you're pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months
  • you've had a stillbirth in the past 12 months
  • you're getting treatment in an NHS hospital from a hospital dentist (but you may still need to pay for dentures or bridges)
  • you receive War Pension Scheme payments, or Armed Forces Compensation Scheme payments and the treatment is for your accepted disability

You can also get free NHS dental treatment if you or your partner receive certain benefits including:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit with Savings Credit
  • Universal Credit – but only if your income is below a certain amount

How do I get an emergency NHS dentist appointment?

If you need immediate care for your teeth, you should:

  • Ask your regular dentist whether they can offer an emergency appointment.
  • Phone NHS111, who can locate an urgent dental service.
  • Visit A&E if you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding, or face, mouth or teeth injuries.
