HW10: What we do – including

It’s important to us to keep service users at the heart of the conversation.
Text ID: 10 years of including . Two overlapping speech bubbles hover over the final word which is underlined in pink.

We want to make sure everyone is involved in improving health and social care, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or religion. We’ve been improving how we connect with communities that are seldom listened to, as we know their point of view is a valuable one. We’ve been lucky enough to be able to work alongside some great community groups on a number of projects who have helped us achieve this, although we know the work is ongoing and there’s always room to do better.

The last couple of years have seen a step up in terms of how we approach accessibility, and local Healthwatch across the network have raised the issue of accessible information as part of a nationwide campaign. For those who might be digitally excluded, we’re reproducing some of our printed materials and spending more time out in the community.

We also want to make sure people are included in our work. One of the key ways we do this is through our volunteer programme. From board members to young volunteers, there’s a place for local people to have their say and get involved.

Our volunteers give feedback on our workplan, take part in a report reading panel, and have worked with us on strategy and research tasks. They are also key to our engagement activities, attending all kinds of events across Trafford and giving their perspectives on what’s going on.

Here’s what long-time volunteer and board member Jean has to say:

“Volunteering for Healthwatch has enabled me to get involved and become included with my local community. The variety of volunteering opportunities available under the Healthwatch umbrella has provided me with the chance to take part in areas of work where my input has been valued and helped to bring about positive change. Healthwatch volunteering has enabled me to broaden my knowledge and work with diverse of groups across the borough. A thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile experience.”
